New ATECO codes are announced in Italy.
Starting January 1, 2025, significant changes are coming for VAT holders with the introduction of the new ATECO code system. These codes, used for identifying types of economic activities, will need to be adopted by April 1, 2025.
ATECO codes are identification codes used by Istat for statistical purposes, including the production and dissemination of official data. They are also used for tax purposes. The new codes aim to align the Italian system with the European classification, NACE Rev. 2.1, as part of the EU’s efforts to harmonize the VAT system across Europe.
The timeline is as follows:
- January 1, 2025: The new ATECO codes will be available for disclosure.
- April 1, 2025: The new classification must be adopted for all administrative and fiscal obligations.
From the 2025 tax year declarations, the new Ateco codes must be used.
The revision of the ATECO code system was managed by the ATECO Committee. The new classification focuses on the type of products or services offered. For existing companies, the reclassification process will be automatic, and they will be informed of their updated Ateco code through digital channels provided by the Chamber of Commerce. During a transitional period, records will contain both the old and new ATECO codes. From April 1, 2025, the new codes must be used in all tax documents. The Revenue Agency will provide updated forms in time for the new classification. Taxpayers do not need to submit a declaration of variation for the new ATECO codes. However, they can request a variation if they wish to adapt their ATECO code to better reflect their activities. This could be particularly relevant for professions like influencers who may need to update their codes. For more information and to check the new Ateco 2025 codes, visit the Istat website.
