As Bulgaria prepares to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, the government has released official guidelines detailing the rules for dual pricing and dual currency circulation.

Dual Pricing Period: August 8, 2025 – August 8, 2026. Under the Act on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria (AEOI), traders in the non-financial sector are required to display prices in both Bulgarian levs and euros for a full year. The guidelines emphasize:

-Clear and legible price displays in both currencies

-Consistent font size for lev and euro prices

-Use of recognizable abbreviations such as lv., €, BGN, EUR

-Avoidance of confusing or excessive design elements

These rules apply to a wide range of scenarios, including packaged goods, bulk items, and services offered outside traditional retail outlets.

During the first month of 2026, both the lev and the euro will be accepted as legal tender. This dual circulation period allows consumers to pay in either currency while businesses adjust to the new monetary system.

The guidelines were developed by the expert working group “non-financial sector” within the Coordination Council for Bulgaria’s Eurozone accession. They apply to all traders outside the financial services sector. Financial institutions will follow separate regulations under the Act on the Regulation. These measures are designed to protect consumers, promote transparency, and build trust as Bulgaria integrates into the eurozone. Businesses are encouraged to begin preparations immediately to ensure full compliance and avoid disruptions during the transition.
