Brazil has published Technical Note 2026.004 version 1.00, introducing technical changes to prepare the e-Invoice and e-Receipt systems for the new alphanumeric CNPJ format.

The change follows Normative Instruction RFB No. 2,229/2024, which allows the CNPJ to include letters because the current numeric format is gradually running out of available numbers.

The update affects XML schemas, web services, access keys and identification fields used for issuers, recipients, carriers, marketplaces, payment intermediaries and technical managers. Systems that currently treat the CNPJ as only numeric will need to be updated.

The main impact is technical. Companies, ERP providers, fiscal middleware providers and developers must review databases, validations, APIs, XML generation, access key storage and integrations with SEFAZ.

The official schedule is:

  1. Testing environment: June 1, 2026
  2. Production environment: July 1, 2026

Brazil is preparing its e-Invoice and e-Receipt infrastructure for alphanumeric CNPJ numbers. The legal concept is simple, but the technical impact is broad because many systems currently assume that CNPJ values are only numeric.
