Hungary's Tax Authority (NAV) announced on October 16, 2026, that it is expanding its existing cash register data retrieval service to include information generated by electronic cash registers (e-Cash Registers, known locally as e-pénztárgépek).

The new functionality will allow businesses to retrieve e-Cash Register receipt data directly through their accounting software, ERP systems or other business management applications using machine-to-machine (M2M) communication.

According to the Tax Authority, the expanded service will become available in a test environment during the second half of October 2026, allowing software developers to prepare and test their integrations.

This is a technical service development rather than a new fiscalization obligation. The service will remain optional, and the Tax Authority has not yet announced a confirmed production launch date.

The Tax Authority introduced its M2M cash register data retrieval service in 2023.

The service originally allowed businesses to download log files submitted to the Tax Authority by their traditional online cash registers (OPG) through a direct connection between the Tax Authority and their own software.

This allowed retailers and accounting professionals to access cash register information without manually extracting and processing data from individual devices.

The October 2026 development extends this functionality to e-Cash Registers, Hungary's newer fiscal cash register technology.

Businesses will be able to retrieve receipt data already transmitted from their e-Cash Registers to the Tax Authority in a machine-readable format.

The retrieved information can subsequently be used for accounting, sales analysis, business reporting and statistical purposes.

The development does not replace the existing obligation for e-Cash Registers to communicate the required fiscal information to the Tax Authority.

Instead, it provides businesses with an additional way to access and process information that their cash registers have already submitted.

The expanded service uses the existing M2M communication channel.

Businesses can connect compatible accounting or business management software to the Tax Authority and request data originating from their own e-Cash Registers.

The process builds on the infrastructure already available for traditional online cash registers.

To access the service, businesses must have a technical user with the appropriate permissions created through the Tax Authority’s User Management system (Felhasználókezelő).

Companies already using the existing online cash register data retrieval functionality do not need to register again or request separate authorization.

However, existing software must be updated to support the additional e-Cash Register data retrieval functionality.

The Tax Authority has confirmed that the technical specifications will be made available to developers through its official GitHub repository.

The Tax Authority plans to make the expanded service available in a test environment during the second half of October 2026.

This testing phase will allow software developers to examine the interface, implement the necessary connections and verify how their applications process the retrieved information.

The Tax Authority has also invited software developers to share their testing experiences, observations and recommendations through the platform.

These submissions may contribute to further improvements before the service becomes generally available.

At this stage, the Tax Authority has not specified a mandatory implementation deadline for businesses or a confirmed date for production availability.

The expanded service may be particularly useful for businesses operating multiple retail locations or processing substantial volumes of daily transactions.

Retailers typically use several systems to manage transactions, payments, inventory and financial accounting.

Where cash register data must be extracted or transferred manually, additional reconciliation work may be necessary.

By allowing accounting and business management software to retrieve information directly from the Tax Authority, the new service can support more automated processing of fiscal sales records.

Impact on affected businesses

The development is directly relevant to retailers, retail chains, POS software providers, e-Cash Register solution providers and accounting software developers.

For retailers, the principal benefit is easier access to fiscal receipt information already available to the Tax Authority.

Businesses using traditional online cash registers can continue using the existing retrieval functionality, while those adopting e-Cash Registers may gain access to additional data through the same communication channel.

For software developers and system integrators, the change requires technical adaptation.

Existing applications must be capable of requesting, receiving and processing e-Cash Register receipt information according to the Tax Authority’s published specifications.

The development is also relevant to Hungary's broader transition from traditional online cash registers to the e-Cash Register system.

However, the new data retrieval functionality does not change the established migration deadlines, receipt issuance requirements or mandatory reporting obligations.

It concerns access to previously submitted fiscal data rather than the creation of new transaction reporting requirements.

What should retailers and POS providers do?

Retailers interested in using the expanded service should first identify whether their existing accounting or business management software supports the Tax Authority’s M2M cash register data retrieval interface.

Businesses already using the service should contact their software providers to determine when the additional e-Cash Register functionality will be supported.

POS, ERP and accounting software developers should review the Tax Authority’s technical documentation and prepare their applications for testing during the second half of October.

Testing should focus on successful data retrieval, correct processing of receipt information and reconciliation with existing business records.

Companies should also verify that their technical users have the required permissions.

From a fiscalization perspective, the development is relevant because it allows information transmitted to the Tax Authority for compliance purposes to be reused in businesses' internal accounting and reporting processes.

The main change is not additional reporting to the Tax Authority, but improved access to fiscal information that the Tax Authority already holds.
