Highlight

Italy is the first country in Europe that has implemented fiscalization requirements. They use hardware fiscalizaton with two types of devices: RT printer and RT server. The country has used the euro (€) as its official currency since January 1, 1999.

Fiscalization regulations in Italy have been implemented to prevent data manipulation and to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and completeness of transactional data. The use of certified RT fiscal devices—either an RT printer or an RT server—is mandatory. These devices enable secure, direct communication between the retailer’s system and the Tax Authority’s server. As of 2025, new regulations permit the use of software-based solutions as an alternative to traditional RT fiscal devices. This ongoing transition introduces an entirely new model of fiscalization within the Italian market.

Type of fiscalization: Hardware

All taxpayers carrying out retail sales or services in Italy must use RT fiscal devices (RT printer or RT server), with full mandatory adjustment completed by 1 January 2021. The switch to RT requires issuing a commercial document instead of the old fiscal receipt, along with electronic recording, storage, and online transmission of sales data to the Revenue Agency in a prescribed XML format. Each day, the RT device must perform a daily closing by midnight, generating and sealing an XML file that is automatically transmitted to the Tax Authority, with system blocking if this obligation is not fulfilled

* The software solution instead of RT devices is introduced as a possibility, and this process is currently in progress.
