Warranty on goods and digital services extended in Austria
Summary
The new Consumer Guarantee Act (VGG) brings changes to warranty rules and is applicable to all purchases of goods and digital services made from January 1st, 2022 and onward.
The statutory warranty period of two years applies to defects that already existed at the time of purchase. Because this is very difficult for consumers to prove, a so-called “reversal of the burden of proof” applied under the old law for the first six months. This period has now been extended to one year.

This means that in the event of a defect (e.g. the TV suddenly goes black), it is assumed within the first year after purchase that the defect already existed when the product was sold. In this phase, enforcing a warranty claim is much easier.
The VGG does not apply to real estate, live animals and (non-digital) work contracts.
