In this direction, the interconnection of 540,000 cash registers and other tax mechanisms with the POS terminals of businesses has also been launched, although ongoing technical problems have postponed its implementation once again for the first quarter of 2024 (after the initial autumn deadlines).
However, based on the timetable so far for the 140,000 tax electronic mechanisms with terminals (EAFDSS type), their withdrawal and replacement with new types of closed and tamper-proof mechanisms is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024 for catering businesses and by the end of October 2023 for other business sectors (as the latest plan is set up).
The interconnection of the mentioned tax electronic mechanisms with the POS of businesses is a very important measure that aims to close all the possibilities of tax evasion that exist today in Greece that currently still allow certain taxpayers to avoid issuing receipts for retail transactions (even if they are paid by cards through POS) or to alter the data of the receipts they have issued to their customers, or even to exclude real-value receipts from the memory of the tax mechanism and keep different receipts than those given to their customers.
With the interconnection of cash registers and other tax mechanisms with the mentioned POS terminals, each card payment will be made only if the receipt has been issued by the cash register, while the POS terminal will not be able to accept so-called "free transactions, i.e., transactions outside the cash register or other devices, as they are not initiated by the cash register.
According to the latest announcements, these measures are going to encompass various traders, including those who didn't have the obligation to use card terminals so far.
