Special Exemption for Sunday work during the Olimpic Games

Opening a business on Sunday in France is, in principle, prohibited. This day is traditionally intended for employees to rest (article L3132-3 of the labor code)  who cannot work more than six days a week. There are, however, a certain number of exceptions to Sunday rest. They may be temporary, permanent, granted by the prefecture or the town hall, or based on a geographical basis.

 

In the context of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, exemptions from Sunday rest may be granted in the municipalities where the competition sites are located, as well as in municipalities bordering or located near these sites.

Thus, in order to take into account the "needs of the public resulting from the expected exceptional influx of tourists and workers,"  authorization may be granted to a retail establishment that provides goods or services to deviate from the Sunday rest rule by allocating weekly rest on a rotating basis.

This specific measure does not replace the other exceptions to Sunday rest. Businesses can submit a request for an exemption in the prefecture where the store is located.
