The UK government has announced a series of reforms aimed at encouraging the broader adoption of electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) and will initiate a consultation on this subject. The consultation seeks to gather feedback from businesses on how HMRC can facilitate investment in and promote the use of e-invoicing. During the Autumn Budget on October 30, 2024, the Chancellor confirmed that this consultation will be launched in early 2025 to establish standards and enhance e-invoicing uptake.

The goal of implementing e-invoicing is to significantly reduce administrative burdens, improve cash flow, enhance productivity, automate processes, and minimize errors in tax returns, thereby contributing to closing the tax gap. Currently, there is no requirement for businesses to use e-invoicing for B2B transactions.
