As of June 2025, the 1000-krone banknote (approximately EUR 135) and older banknote series are no longer valid for payment in Denmark. This marks the end of the first phase of the country’s largest banknote recall.
Since the recall began on 30 November 2023, Danmarks Nationalbank has received kr. 20.5 billion in returned notes. Of this, kr. 19.7 billion came from the 1000-krone notes, 93% of those in circulation. Only about kr. 1.4 billion remains unreturned.
Older banknote series had a lower return rate: just 26% were handed in, totaling kr. 873 million. The remaining kr. 2.5 billion likely consists of lost notes or collector items, according to Danmarks Nationalbank.
The recall was well publicized, with 97% of the population aware of the invalidation.
