Swedish fiscalization requires that sales be registered in a cash register connected to a fiscal control unit. The cash register must meet a certain standard, which the manufacturers of the cash register are responsible for meeting. The fiscal control unit must be certified by a specific body in the Swedish tax authority. Taxpayers must register with the tax authority to confirm that they are using a cash register connected to a fiscal control unit.

The requirements for the content of the data that must be recorded in the fiscal control unit are included in the regulations. This includes:

  • One log for counters: the total number of receipts issued, missing receipts, the number of regular receipts, the number of training receipts, the number of copies of receipts, the total sales, and the grand total.
  • Another log contains specific information about each receipt: receipt number, date, time, sales amount, VAT amount, and a unique control code generated by the control unit.

Importantly, the information in the control unit is encrypted and can only be read and decrypted by the Swedish tax authority.
