The country's current practice involves the separate collection of household plastic waste in public bins. Yet, environmental organizations advocate for a deposit system that rewards consumers for returning their used packaging. This method is expected to enhance recycling efficiency, as presently nearly half of such materials are not recycled.

Annually, Slovenia discards an estimated 10,000 tons of plastic beverage and milk containers. To align with EU directives, Slovenia aims to elevate its separate collection rate for these materials to 90% by 2029.

The deposit return system for packaging recovery is well-established across Europe, known for improving waste collection, meeting environmental objectives, and generating employment opportunities. The private sector suggests a ten-cent deposit per plastic bottle.

While different eco-groups ask for immediate action, the Ministry of the Environment has slated the system's introduction for 2025, as reported by Slovenian news outlets.
