The Portuguese Tax Authority (AT) has introduced Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on the Finance Portal to improve account security. This extra verification step will help protect users from unauthorized access and credential theft.

The rollout will be gradual:

·         Phase 1 targets individual taxpayers without business or professional activity.

· Later phases will include business users and organizations

Each time users log in, they’ll enter:

·         Their NIF and password

·         A unique code sent via SMS

To use 2FA, taxpayers must have a confirmed phone number registered with the Tax Authority. If users need to change their phone number, they can do so through the portal or via authentication.gov, using a Citizen Card or Digital Mobile Key.

How to Enable 2FA – the taxpayer will have to go to the Finance Portal menu: Services > Taxpayer Authentication > Access Data.
