New Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury

An MP (Member of Parliament) is appointed Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury (XST), replacing the last MP, who is now Chief Secretary to the Treasury. The XST oversees tax system and administration policy.

Advisory Fuel Rates (Effective September 1, 2025)

HMRC updated advisory fuel rates for company car users:

  • Reimbursement for business travel or repayment for private travel fuel costs.
  • Electric car rates: 8p/mile (home charging), 14p/mile (public charging).

Self-Assessment Scam Warning

HMRC warns of income tax self-assessment scams offering fake refunds or demanding payments. Over 170,000 scam referrals were reported in the year to July 31, 2025, including 47,000 fake refund claims. Taxpayers should protect personal information.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) Guidance Update

HMRC updated its interactive MTD guidance for income tax, clarifying compliance requirements and exemptions/deferrals from the Spring Statement 2025.
