As Bulgaria prepares to officially adopt the euro (EUR) on January 1, 2026, two important changes are set to affect citizens:
- a new system for displaying currency exchange rates and
- a brief shutdown of ATMs and card payments during the transition.
Starting in 2026, currency exchange boards across the country will switch to the standard Eurozone format. This change affects only how the information is shown, not the actual value of the exchange.
Current System (Bulgarian Lev - BGN): Boards show how many leva you get for one unit of a foreign currency (e.g., $1 USD = 1.75 BGN). New System (Euro - EUR): Boards will show how many units of a foreign currency correspond to one euro (e.g., €1 EUR = $1.05 USD).
On the night of December 31 to January 1, all ATMs will experience a temporary technological pause lasting about 2–3 hours. This outage is necessary for the final system switchover to the euro. During this brief period, card payments and ATM withdrawals will be temporarily unavailable. Operations will resume gradually in the early hours of January 1, with ATMs dispensing only euro banknotes. The new ATM systems will be loaded with both leva and euro notes in separate compartments, learning from the experience of other transitioning countries.
As a reminder, commercial establishments will continue to accept leva banknotes and coins throughout January 2026. Banks will exchange all leva cash for euros free of charge at the fixed conversion rate until the end of June 2026. All leva-denominated bank accounts will be automatically converted to euros at no cost. Existing bank cards will remain valid, with fees recalculated at the fixed rate.
