Brazil will introduce a new alphanumeric format for the CNPJ (National Registry of Legal Entities) starting in July 2026, replacing the current 14-digit numeric structure to expand the number of available business identification combinations. The change will require companies to update databases, validation rules, POS systems, and electronic invoicing systems to support letters in the CNPJ and ensure compatibility with electronic tax documents.

Brazil will introduce a new alphanumeric format for the CNPJ (National Registry of Legal Entities) starting July 2026, according to the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service. The change updates the structure of the company identification number used across tax systems, registrations, and electronic documents.

The current CNPJ consists of 14 numeric digits. However, due to the growing number of businesses being created in Brazil, the available number combinations are expected to run out in the future.

To solve this issue, the new model will:

  1. Continue using 14 characters,
  2. Allow both letters and numbers,
  3. Significantly increase the number of possible combinations.

This change ensures that Brazil’s business registration system can support many more companies in the coming decades.

The introduction of letters into the CNPJ format will require updates in many business systems. Companies may need to:

  1. Update databases and systems that currently accept only numeric values,
  2. Adjust data fields from numeric to alphanumeric formats,
  3. Update validation rules and check digit calculations,
  4. Review APIs, integrations, and ERP systems.

Retailers may face additional challenges because some POS devices and keyboards only allow numeric input for CNPJ numbers.

With the new format:

-       Systems must allow letters to be entered,

-       Some businesses may need to upgrade or replace POS equipment,

-       Retailers should review their systems early to avoid operational disruptions.

The new CNPJ format will also affect electronic tax documents, including:

  1. NF-e (electronic invoice)
  2. NFC-e (consumer invoice)
  3. CT-e (electronic transport document)
  4. NFCom (electronic communication services invoice)
  5. NF3e (electronic electricity invoice)
  6. NFS-e (electronic service invoice)

Issuing systems will need to update their validation rules and document layouts to support alphanumeric CNPJ numbers.

Businesses that do not update their systems may face:

-       Rejection of electronic invoices,

-       Integration failures,

-       Incorrect CNPJ validation,

-       Operational issues in automated processes.

Although the change takes effect in July 2026, companies are encouraged to start preparing by:

-       Reviewing database structures,

-       Updating validation logic,

-       Checking system integrations,

-       Consulting software providers,

-       Performing system testing before implementation.

The technical changes for electronic tax documents were published in Joint Technical Note 2025.001 (May 8, 2025) and are available on the National NF-e Portal.

While the CNPJ will still contain 14 characters, the shift to an alphanumeric format will require updates across systems, integrations, and electronic tax documents. Early preparation will be important for companies to avoid technical issues and ensure smooth compliance when the new model becomes effective in July 2026.
