Bergen’s city council has voted to apply for national recognition as a “typical tourist destination.” If approved, this would allow shops in certain parts of the city to open on Sundays.

Oslo has made the same request, as both cities want shops to match the needs of tourists. In Norway, most stores are still closed on Sundays because of national law, even though evening shopping was allowed years ago.

Changing the law could make shopping easier for people and might create new jobs in Oslo and Bergen. Now it’s up to regional officials to decide, balancing tourist demand with Norway’s tradition of keeping Sundays quiet
